A PhD dissertation titled Government Economic Reform Issues on Iraqi Satellite Channels and Their Relationship to the Public\u2019s Economic Knowledge<\/em> was discussed at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad. The dissertation was submitted by Omar Ayed Abd Hassan Al-Hamdani, a researcher in the Department of Radio and Television.<\/p>\n

The dissertation defense committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Hussein Ali Noor, with Professor Dr. Wissam Fadhil Radhi as supervisor. The committee included Professor Dr. Shukriya Kokaz Al-Sarraj, Assistant Professor Dr. Muntaha Hadi, Assistant Professor Dr. Safad Hussam Hamoudi, and Professor Dr. Huweda Sayed Ali from Cairo University as an external member.<\/p>\n

The dissertation examined how Iraqi satellite channels address government economic reform issues and the extent to which such coverage is related to the public\u2019s level of economic knowledge. It also analyzed the content of economic talk shows and assessed their impact on the public\u2019s knowledge and attitudes toward economic reform issues.<\/p>\n

The analytical findings showed that government spending reform received significant attention in economic talk shows, reflecting public interest in issues that directly affect daily life, particularly spending rationalization and improving the quality of public services.<\/p>\n

The findings also revealed clear efforts by economic programs to diversify their coverage of key economic issues, although the relative importance of topics varied from one program to another. The programs primarily relied on presenting information and facts as key elements of their informational role.<\/p>\n

Field results further showed that economic talk shows contributed to increasing respondents\u2019 knowledge and enhancing their understanding of economic issues and daily economic developments. The audience regarded the news function of economic programs as one of their essential roles and confirmed their reliance on these programs as a source of economic news and information.<\/p>\n

The findings also indicated that the knowledge acquired through following these programs contributed to developing a more comprehensive understanding of government economic reform issues among the public. The programs were also found to influence some of the audience\u2019s attitudes and perceptions toward these issues.<\/p>\n

The study recommended greater attention to specialized media and academic research addressing economic topics and issues, with a focus on national economic priorities in economic talk shows. It also called for continued television coverage of major economic developments and issues and for connecting them to citizens\u2019 daily lives.<\/p>\n

The study further recommended selecting specialized and experienced guests to participate in economic talk shows to ensure professional and effective coverage of economic topics and provide balanced presentations of different viewpoints. It also emphasized the importance of engaging economic experts, academics, and specialized analysts to provide comprehensive economic perspectives and strengthen public confidence in media coverage of economic issues.<\/p>\n

The recommendations also called for greater attention by Iraqi satellite channels to economic talk shows and for hosting qualified experts and specialists. Economic topics should be presented in a comprehensive yet accessible manner to enhance public economic literacy and knowledge. The study also recommended continuously evaluating economic content through field research and consultation with experts, academics, media professionals, practitioners, and members of the public to improve the quality of these programs.<\/p>\n

The dissertation defense reflects the College of Mass Communication\u2019s interest in academic research addressing economic media and its role in enhancing public knowledge of economic issues, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education and Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.<\/p>\n
