A master’s thesis titled “The Use of Modern Digital Technologies in Producing TV News Reports” was discussed at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad. The thesis was submitted by Karrar Obaid Jameel, a researcher in the Department of Radio and Television.
The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohsen Jaloub Jabr, with Prof. Dr. Adel Abdul Razzaq as supervisor. Assistant Professor Dr. Sharif Saeed Hamid served as a committee member, while Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Mawloud was an external committee member.
The study was conducted in the context of the rapid technological transformations taking place in the media field. It focused on identifying the mechanisms for using modern digital technologies in producing TV news reports at Iraqi satellite channels, the motivations behind their use, the main challenges involved, and their impact on the quality of news content.
The researcher adopted the survey method, using a questionnaire targeting a sample of news staff working in Iraqi satellite channel newsrooms. The findings showed that digital technologies have become a key component of the preparation, production, and broadcasting of news reports, from information gathering and processing to editing, post-production, archiving, and distribution.
The results also showed that the main motivations for adopting these technologies included saving time and effort, improving audio and visual quality, facilitating editing and post-production, diversifying presentation techniques, and enhancing competition among media organizations.
At the same time, the study identified several professional and technical challenges, most notably limited training and professional development, inadequate technological infrastructure, the high cost of equipment and software, and the need for greater technological integration within newsroom environments.
Based on the findings, the researcher recommended adopting comprehensive institutional strategies to strengthen digital transformation in news production by expanding continuous training programs for newsroom staff, developing technological infrastructure, and upgrading equipment and systems in line with international standards. The study also called for carefully planned investment programs to provide advanced technologies and reduce financial burdens through supportive partnerships.
The researcher further emphasized the importance of strengthening technological integration across newsroom departments, activating knowledge-sharing and experience-exchange programs with Arab media organizations, and paying greater attention to the creative and aesthetic aspects of news report presentation to maintain audience engagement.
The thesis concluded that digital transformation in news production is no longer an option but a professional necessity driven by the rapid pace of events and intense competition in the contemporary media environment. Such transformation contributes to improving media performance and producing news content capable of competing in a rapidly changing global media landscape.
In terms of its development-related dimensions, the thesis aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, by calling for the development of media curricula and the enhancement of the skills of professionals working in newsrooms.
