The Department of Radio and Television at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, organized a practical lecture for first-year students as part of the “Information Sources and News Verification” learning unit. The lecture was presented by faculty member Dhulfiqar Fadhil Salman as part of the “Masar Mutajaddid” (Renewed Path) program, which aims to develop students’ skills and strengthen their professional abilities in handling information in the digital media environment.
The lecture highlighted the importance of relying on credible sources in journalism and verifying information before publication, particularly amid the widespread circulation of misleading news on social media platforms. It also reviewed different types of information sources, explaining the differences between primary, secondary, and tertiary sources and how to use them professionally when preparing news stories and media reports.
The lecture featured an interactive practical component, with students taking part in exercises to analyze circulating news, identify fabricated content, and learn about key digital tools used to verify images and videos published online.
The lecture also addressed contemporary media challenges associated with the spread of content generated or manipulated using artificial intelligence technologies. It explained key indicators that can help journalists identify such content and assess its credibility.
The lecture is part of a series of educational activities through which the Department of Radio and Television seeks to strengthen students’ digital verification skills and critical thinking and prepare them to address the challenges of journalism in the digital age while upholding the principles of accuracy and credibility in media work.
