The Human Rights Unit at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific workshop titled “Political Rights in Society and Individuals’ Right to Participate in Decision-Making,” for College students. The workshop was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Anaam Abdulridha Sultan Shukr, with the participation of students Sajjad Hussein and Saba Mohammed.
The workshop addressed the concept of political rights and their importance in building a democratic society based on active participation in public life and decision-making. It also highlighted the role of university youth in promoting awareness of these rights and the importance of participating in social and political issues.
The workshop also discussed mechanisms of political participation, particularly participation in elections, and emphasized the importance of youth engagement in supporting the democratic process through informed and responsible participation.
During the workshop, student Sajjad Hussein presented a research paper on ways individuals participate in elections and decision-making, highlighting the importance of electoral participation as a key means of expressing citizens’ will and contributing to the formation of political institutions.
Student Saba Mohammed presented a research paper on the quota system and its role in enhancing the representation of different groups within political institutions, particularly in supporting women’s participation in decision-making positions.
The workshop featured active engagement from the attending students and concluded with a number of recommendations emphasizing the need to strengthen young people’s awareness of political rights, encourage active participation in elections, and promote a culture of democracy and participation in decision-making within society.
