The Guidance and Counseling Unit at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific workshop titled “Media and Its Role in Exposing International Human Trafficking Networks,” presented by Prof. Dr. Adel Al-Ghurairi and Assistant Professor Dr. Safad Hussam Hammoudi, with the attendance of a number of students from the Department of Radio and Television.
The workshop addressed key concepts related to human trafficking, its forms, and the mechanisms used by trafficking networks, with a focus on the risks of falling victim to such networks, particularly through social media platforms. It also highlighted the role of the media in exposing these criminal practices and shedding light on victims, while emphasizing journalists’ ethical and professional responsibility when covering this issue and protecting victims’ privacy.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of information verification and developing students’ digital media skills to counter misinformation and expose organized crimes. These efforts contribute to preparing an informed generation capable of using media to serve society and defend human rights.
The workshop featured active engagement from students through questions and contributions, reflecting their interest in developing their media and digital skills in line with Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
