The College of Mass Communication at the University of Baghdad held a scientific workshop titled “The Role of Media in Reducing Divorce and Addressing Its Causes.” The workshop was delivered by Dr. Rana Abdul Latif and Assistant Lecturer Katman Khudair, with the participation of several college students. It aimed to raise social awareness of family issues and highlight the role of the media in addressing them.
The workshop examined divorce, its main causes, and its social, psychological, and economic consequences. It also highlighted the preventive and awareness-raising role of the media in curbing the problem and strengthening media students’ understanding of their professional and social responsibilities when covering family issues in ways that help preserve family cohesion.
The sessions explored the concept of divorce, its causes and consequences, and how the media can help prevent it by promoting family awareness, dialogue, and mutual understanding. They also discussed preventive and educational approaches to developing media messages that support family stability.
The workshop further addressed remedial and reform-oriented approaches to family problems, as well as the economic and social issues associated with divorce. It emphasized the responsibility of media institutions to cover such issues without sensationalism or misinformation and highlighted the role media students can play in producing awareness-raising content that promotes family responsibility and helps reduce divorce.
The workshop concluded with recommendations to expand awareness campaigns and media programs, use digital platforms to promote family awareness, and strengthen cooperation among academic, media, and social institutions to produce responsible content that helps prevent family disputes and address their consequences.
The workshop reflects the College of Mass Communication’s commitment to applying academic knowledge to serve society and strengthening the media’s role in addressing social challenges. It aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
