Today, Thursday, the College of Media at the University of Baghdad organized a graduation ceremony for the Bachelor’s degree students for the academic year 2023-2024, with the participation of faculty members from the academic departments.

The Dean of the college, Professor Dr. Ammar Taher, stated in his speech: “Here we are for the second year, gathering together to recite the graduates’ oath, signaling the departure of a new batch of our students to the job market, armed with experiences, knowledge, and skills to embark on their professional lives amidst intense competition to capture the audience’s attention and provoke interest.”

He added, “Despite the horizontal expansion witnessed by the Iraqi media, represented by the increase in the number of satellite channels and radio stations… which is a healthy state… it has been accompanied by many negative phenomena, manifested in the departure from professional norms and the disappearance of values and professional standards.”

Dr. Taher also emphasized “the importance of the media in building and enhancing public awareness, conveying facts and events objectively and accurately,” affirming that “the media plays a vital role in shaping public opinion and directing public discussions.”

He continued: “Today, this department comes as a urgent reminder to future journalists that the profession is an honor… the word is a responsibility… and the opinion is a trust… and adhering to the practices of journalistic work is as important as one’s conscience and sense of responsibility.”

In return, the batch of Bachelor’s degree students for the academic year 2023-2024 delegated the student Hani Al-Aati to deliver a speech on their behalf, in which he expressed their joy and pride in this great achievement, expressing “thanks and gratitude to the faculty members for their qualitative and continuous efforts during the years of study.”

He pointed out that “the dedication of faculty members in the academic departments and their dedication to providing knowledge and information to students plays a major role in creating a suitable educational environment and achieving educational goals,” adding: “Thank you to everyone who provided us with practical and professional skills, guided us, and supported us throughout our academic journey, and we will remain faithful to our leading college and our alma mater.”

At the end of the ceremony, the students recited the graduation oath amidst interaction and encouragement from the audience. This occasion, which is held for the second consecutive time at the College of Media, serves as an important reminder to future journalists of the importance of their role and responsibility in society and the preservation of the values of journalism and professionalism.
