The Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, organized a discussion session titled “The Impact of Internet Language on Students’ Spelling Skills,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Kholoud Jabbar, with the attendance of a number of College students and those interested in language and media affairs.
The discussion addressed the major changes brought about by Internet language and social media in students’ writing, particularly the use of abbreviations, symbols, and forms of writing that do not adhere to standard spelling rules, which may affect students’ academic writing skills.
Dr. Jabbar presented several examples illustrating the impact of extensive use of digital platforms on the proper use of the Arabic language. She emphasized the importance of strengthening students’ writing skills and providing continuous language training to maintain accuracy in written expression, particularly for media students, for whom language is an essential professional tool.
The session featured active participation from students through questions and contributions focusing on ways to balance the use of Internet language in everyday life with adherence to proper language rules in academic and media writing.
The discussion session is part of the academic activities organized by the College of Mass Communication at the University of Baghdad to develop students’ academic and professional skills and raise their awareness of the linguistic challenges posed by the modern digital environment.
