The Scientific Affairs Unit at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, organized a training workshop for graduate students titled “Multimedia Reporting: Filming Techniques.” The workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Ali Abbas Fadhil, Head of the Radio and Television Department, who discussed the methods of producing multimedia journalistic reports and their editorial and technical requirements.

Fadhil introduced the concept of multimedia reporting, which combines written text with photographs, video clips, and interactive digital elements. He highlighted the importance of integrating these elements with the report’s subject matter to provide additional information, enrich the journalistic story, and enhance its editorial value.

The workshop focused on field filming techniques using mobile phones and basic equipment, emphasizing image clarity and stability, sound quality, and the selection of camera angles and shots that capture event details and present different perspectives to audiences. It also addressed the importance of advance filming plans, defining the message to be conveyed, varying shots, and considering lighting and backgrounds in line with the subject matter and digital publishing requirements.

The technical sessions covered the integrated use of still images and video clips, selecting an appropriate number of photographs relevant to the report, and using editing software when necessary. They also highlighted the importance of vertical filming for interviews and horizontal filming for events to produce professional content suited to digital platforms.

The workshop is part of the College of Mass Communication’s academic and training activities aimed at developing graduate students’ skills and keeping pace with developments in digital journalism and content production, in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, which promotes the development of skills needed for learning and employment.
