The Human Rights Unit at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, held an awareness workshop titled “The Right to Be Different: Challenging the One-Size-Fits-All Mindset and Embracing Social Diversity.” The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Duaa Hammoudi Faraj and aimed to highlight the importance of differences in building a diverse and understanding society.

The workshop explored the concept of a one-size-fits-all mindset and how it imposes uniform patterns of thinking, behavior, and choice, affecting individual freedom and the ability to express oneself and be creative. It also examined the reasons behind intolerance of differences, including prejudice, fanaticism, and fear of unfamiliar ideas. The discussion highlighted the role of some media outlets and social media platforms in spreading stereotypes and hate speech.

The workshop emphasized that diversity in experiences, cultures, abilities, and viewpoints can contribute to developing ideas and improving decision-making. It also stressed the importance of distinguishing between natural differences, disagreements that can be resolved through dialogue, and conflicts that may arise from intolerance and rejection of others.

The workshop concluded with several recommendations, including expanding awareness activities to combat discrimination, bullying, and exclusion; encouraging constructive dialogue and responsible expression of opinions; and strengthening the role of educational and media institutions in promoting diversity and countering misinformation and hate speech. It also called for supporting joint community initiatives and ensuring equal opportunities while respecting individuals’ different abilities and interests.

The activity aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, by promoting tolerance and respect for rights, and Goal 4: Quality Education.
