The Qualification and Employment Unit at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad, held an academic workshop titled “The Digital Generation and Spelling: From Simplification to Decline,” delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Jassim Tarish, a faculty member in the Public Relations Department.

The workshop examined changes in the writing and spelling habits of the digital generation amid the widespread use of social media and messaging applications. It explored how these platforms have encouraged abbreviated and simplified language patterns and their impact on writing accuracy and clarity of expression.

The discussion addressed the effects of frequent use of abbreviated digital language on everyday writing practices, as well as the importance of preserving Arabic spelling rules and strengthening students’ writing skills. This is particularly important for media students, whose fields require linguistic accuracy and the ability to craft clear and professional messages.

The workshop is part of the academic and training activities organized by the college’s Qualification and Employment Unit to develop students’ linguistic and professional skills in line with the requirements of media work.

The workshop supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by strengthening the linguistic and cognitive skills essential for learning and effective communication.
