The Continuous Education Unit at the College of Media, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific workshop titled “Linguistic Evasion in News Production,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Khulood Jabbar from the Journalism Department. The lecture focused on how linguistic evasions are used in the process of crafting news, highlighting that linguistic evasions are used to conceal and not reveal the true stance of the newspaper or the source of the statement being reported. These linguistic evasions are devoid of positive or negative assessments and are aimed at obscuring the meaning and not taking a specific position.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness among participants about the role of media and journalism in conveying news objectively and reliably, enhancing their skills in using language systematically to build meanings and direct attention towards specific aspects of the news. It also explained the concept of linguistic evasions and clarified how they are used for concealment and not revealing the true position in the news, while emphasizing the importance of avoiding bias and focusing on facts and information without influencing positive or negative judgments.
