A master’s thesis titled “Expatriates’ Reliance on Iraqi Satellite Channels as a Source of Information on Domestic Political Issues” was discussed at the College of Mass Communication, University of Baghdad.
The thesis was presented by Ali Hazem Qasim, a researcher from the Department of Radio and Television.
The examination committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Shareef Saeed, with Prof. Dr. Hussein Dubai serving as the supervisor. Committee members included Assist. Prof. Dr. Haider Ahmed Al-Qutbi and Assist. Prof. Dr. Anmar Ghafel as the external examiner.
The study examined the extent to which Iraqi expatriates rely on Iraqi satellite television channels as a source of information on domestic political issues. It also explored viewing patterns, including the frequency and duration of exposure, the types of channels followed, and the motivations behind relying on these channels to stay informed about political developments in Iraq.
The findings revealed that respondents showed a high level of interest in following political issues through Iraqi satellite channels. The primary motivation for doing so was to keep up with political developments, followed by a sense of national belonging and identity.
The study recommended improving television news bulletins by strengthening analytical depth rather than relying solely on factual reporting. It also called for enhancing the quality of political talk shows through stricter professional standards in selecting guests and presenting political discussions.
